Culture and traditional knowledge will also be at the center of discussions on the climate crisis during Agroecol 2026, to be held November 4–7 at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) in Campo Grande. In partnership with the Caianás Organization, the Mato Grosso do SulComitê de Cultura is participating in the event’s program with activities that bring together artistic expression, ancestral knowledge, climate justice, discussions on the protection of territories, and the empowerment of Indigenous communities.

With the theme “Science, Movement, and Practice: How to Overcome the Climate Crisis?”, Agroecol brings together researchers, family farmers, students, social movements, Indigenous peoples, and representatives of civil society organizations.

The program, developed in partnership with the Committee, begins on Thursday (5), from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the roundtable discussion “Impact and Visibility of Women in Agroecology,” which invites reflections on women’s leadership in agroecological production, the preservation of traditional knowledge, and the development of sustainable alternatives for local territories.

Also on Thursday, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Glauce Rocha Theater at UFMS will host the official opening ceremony of Agroecol 2026, featuring cultural performances that highlight the artistic and cultural diversity of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Among the attractions are Hana’iti Kipâe, featuring dance leaders Devanilson Paz da Costa and Diego Fialho, and the Kzulo Project. The performances will take place on the stage of the Glauce Rocha Theater.

Indigenous Peoples and Culture in the Fight Against the Climate Crisis

On Friday (6), the program continues with the 1st Meeting of the Indigenous Peoples of Mato Grosso do Sul, starting at 9 a.m. at the UFMS Multipurpose Complex. The event provides a space for dialogue on the presence, knowledge, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in discussions about sustainability, environmental preservation, and the protection of their territories. On this day, Agroecol will host a lecture by Leosmar Terena, a researcher and biologist representing the Cainás Organization. Following that, the event will welcome Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Eloy Terena.

In the afternoon, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Architect Jurandir Nogueira Auditorium will host the workshop “No Climate, No Culture —Protection of Territories and the Knowledge of Traditional Peoples and Communities,” led by Arildo Cebalio, an indigenous elder from the Lagoinha Village in Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul, who is also a member of the Cainás Organization.

The participation of the MSComitê de Cultural and the Cainás Organization in Agroecol 2026 reinforces the importance of coordination between cultural policies, social movements, and initiatives focused on sustainability.

“Culture is directly linked to the ways in which we relate to the land, the environment, and our own identity. Being present in this space, alongside Indigenous peoples, women, and social movements, is an opportunity to strengthen dialogue, amplify the visibility of these voices, and build collective paths toward a more just and sustainable society,” emphasizes Bruna Egídio, representative of the Mato Grosso do Sul Comitê de Cultura.
